Why do baby grooming essentials sell so well?
The clue is in the name! They really are essential items - but you often don’t realise it until you need them! A tired parent with a snuffly baby might discover that the nasal aspirator they considered an extra they didn’t really need is in fact an essential at 2am when no one is getting any sleep! These are things that more experienced parents of young children will want to buy for friends and family, so they don’t get caught out in the middle of the night. For a neatly packaged gift, we have complete sets from Tommee Tippee and Safety 1st, that include everything needed for a new baby - including nail scissors, emery boards and a digital thermometer. The great things about these kits is that they can be popped into the nappy changing bag when you're out and about - or popped in an overnight bag if you’re visiting friends and family - so parents can leave confident in the fact that they have everything they might need when not in their own home.
What exactly are baby grooming essentials and what do they do?
The list isn’t too long. There are nasal aspirators. They clear the gunk out of a baby’s nose when they have a cold. Unlike older children, babies can’t blow their noses, so they can get stuffed up very quickly, which can make it harder to breathe. Anyone who has sat up at night with a baby with a stuffy nose knows how distressing that can be for a baby - and for parents! Nail scissors or clippers are essential - babies have the most surprisingly sharp nails, and can scratch themselves really easily. You can buy little cotton mittens to help protect them, but more often than not they don’t stay on long, so nail clipping is the answer. Babies’ nails are so tiny you need special scissors or clippers for the job. Emery boards are another option for keeping nails safe, especially if you have a wriggly baby and are not confident wielding the scissors!
A gentle hairbrush is a key bit of equipment too. Even if a baby doesn’t have much hair, softly stroking the scalp is soothing and calming before bedtime. Softly brushing hair can also help to evenly distribute oil to keep hair healthy - and if the baby has a good head of hair, brushing will help to keep it in place and avoid tangles.
Other essentials include a digital thermometer. It’s not always easy to tell if a baby has a temperature, so the thermometer is a vital piece of kit - reassuring worried parents that all is well, or giving an accurate reading to pass on to a doctor or health care professional if they are concerned about the baby's health.
