Fashion doll Barbie was launched in March 1959 and is still the figurehead of a brand of Mattel dolls and accessories. Barbie has been an important part of the toy fashion doll market for fifty years continues to wow girls into the New Year with the presentation of a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll to the winner of the ‘See What Happens When You Design with Barbie’ competition.
The competition was part of a global marketing initiative by Mattel to drive girl engagement and to promote Barbie’s creative and fashion credentials. The competition was run through a successful on-pack promotion directing girls to a dedicated website about the fashionista competition. Girls were asked to design Barbie’s next outfit and submit their entries online for a chance to win one of thousands of prizes.
The winner, Lucy Miller aged 12 won a grand prize which was the amazing opportunity to have design created into a one off Barbie doll. Lucy was presented with the Barbie doll by Barbie herself, before being chauffeur driven to London in a pink limousine where she enjoyed a trip to the theatre, a shopping spree with spending money, afternoon tea and a night in a luxury London hotel. Five runners up also won a Barbie bedroom makeover.
