Elmer has been a childhood icon since the first Elmer book was published in 1989. This cute patchwork elephant was created by author David McKee – who also created Mr Benn and King Rollo! The story introduces the idea of accepting people’s differences, as well as the idea that our unique characteristics are what make us special and likeable. Elmer does not look like the other elephants, with his brightly coloured squares, and tries to disguise himself to fit in with the grey elephants. However, he finds that they all miss the Elmer he used to be and only by accepting the way he looks does he find real happiness.
More than 7 million Elmer books have been sold worldwide, over £5m of Elmer merchandise is sold worldwide each year and the books have been translated into 50 languages – so this colourful elephant is a popular chap! And, this year, for the first time, he will have a day dedicated to him! Elmer Day falls on 28th May 2016, a day that will be filled with fun events to celebrate Elmer, as well as each other’s differences!
