September 2017 will see the launch of the next series of the Peter Rabbit series that is based on a modern-day interpretation of the tales in the Potter books while retaining the well-loved characters and locations. Peter carries with him his late Father’s journal on how to be a good rabbit. It also details things to help Peter have his own adventures from maps identifying where the juiciest strawberries could be found, to instructions on how to build a sledge or the location of secret tunnels.
The new series is set to be engaging with a joyful blend of humour, drama and adventure. It includes are the original characters Jemima Puddleduck, Jeremy Fisher, Mrs Tiggywinkle and Mr Tod but focuses on 3 key characters; Peter Rabbit and his two best friends, Benjamin Bunny and Lily Bobtail. The character of Lily Bobtail was first launched in 2012 and based on Beatrix Potter herself! At a time when society values the importance of female role models, it is very apt to choose Beatrix herself who was a strong, outspoken and intelligent woman with a heart for animals. Lily in turn is portrayed to be a self-assured, intelligent girl and also affectionate, demonstrating her caring side through her pet ladybird Florence. She remains a core part of the adventures along with Benjamin and Peter – sliding down tunnels, playing in the treehouse, and she isn’t afraid to get her paws dirty!
Sarah, Programme Executive for CBeebies said in an interview by Catherine Carey 2013, that ‘The trio really complement each other well – Peter is brave, quick-witted and loyal but sometimes reckless, whereas Lily is the brains of the outfit: intelligent, logical but no pushover. And little Benjamin is young, always hungry and sometimes lacks confidence, but brings a lot of charming, comedic moments to the show. They’re always going on adventures and always manage to outsmart the baddies!
