Industry experts under the wholesalers spotlight

The lead up to Christmas presents a huge opportunity for retailers to optimise seasonal sales by generating excitement around certain brands, one of them being Rainbow Designs, who have a wide range of licensed character soft collectables.

Every year, Rainbow Designs sets out to capture the hearts of children and adults alike with their character soft toys based on heart-warming story books such as Peter Rabbit and the Very Hungry Caterpillar. This year has been no exception, with the brand adding a treasure trove of delights to their collection, including Peter Rabbit rattles, toys and a new Guess How Much I Love You collection. This week, we interview Rainbow Designs’ Sales Manager, Beverley Cochrane, to find out what really makes the brand special and unique, to what’s getting her excited about the nursery industry.

The Brand

  • What makes Rainbow Designs a valued supplier?

Rainbow designs have an extremely diverse customer base servicing small independent Toy Shops and Gift Shops and High end department stores and specialists’ right through to National High Street Retailers & Grocers. We understand the need of each of our customers and work in the most efficient way possible to ensure all of our customer’s needs are met.

  • What is your favourite product from the Rainbow Designs product range and why?

Brand new to our collections for 2015 is our Peppa Pig Nursery Collection ‘P is for Peppa’. This is the first Peppa Pig Nursery range that is being launched into the market and we are extremely proud to be able to develop and produce this fantastic new product. This new collection includes a large activity Peppa toy that has lots of fantastic sensory and tactile elements each designed to stimulate babies’ senses and encourage development through play.

  • What ‘special something’ does Rainbow Designs have that sets it apart from its major industry competitors?

Our products are recognised for their quality and have been designed using our Learning through play system to ensure that they not only look beautiful but that they have play and development benefits as well. Our products start from birth and grow with a baby through each development stage helping them to develop their Cognitive, Social and Physical skills through play.

  • Can you tell us your company turnover, % growth or market share?

We have had a fantastic 2014 and have beaten our forecast.

  • How many Facebook fans/Twitter followers do Rainbow Designs have?

We currently have 2,000 likes on our Rainbow Designs Facebook page with and 1,212 followers on twitter. We also have a Facebook and Twitter page for our own brand ‘Air Puppy’ this has 2,158 followers on twitter and 909 likes on Facebook.

  • Do your products have any medical authority endorsement or research behind them?

Our Miffy comforter has been endorsed by the Bliss Charity for premature and special care babies to be used in incubators.

  • Have any Rainbow Designs products been spotted in use by celebs? 

Billie Faiers from TOWIE used some of our Peter Rabbit Nursery range to dress the nursery of her baby this was shown on her twitter page and also as an article in Reveal and Closer magazines. The cast of The Monument Men were photographed with our Paddington Plush at their Movie premiers. Hugh Bonneville and Davina McCall have also been photographed with one of our Paddington Plush. Aled Jones posted an image on twitter holding our Cuddly Snowman Plush. Prince George was reported to have had a Peter Rabbit themed birthday party for his first birthday.

The Industry

  • What is exciting you the most about the industry right now in 2014?

There is a current trend for classic & traditional characters amongst consumers. Our traditional brands such as Peter Rabbit and Miffy form a part of the parent’s nostalgic memory which they are keen to pass onto their children. The nurturing endearment of these brands and the brand messages are timeless.

  • How long have you been working in the industry?

Too many years to mention!

  • How have the developments in the ecommerce industry impacted the baby retail sector in your opinion?

We see ecommerce as a positive thing for our business. More of our business moves online each year and is great for big box products that sometimes aren’t suitable for in store.

  • What is it that keeps you driven and sparks your interest in the nursery industry?

The Nursery category is full of innovation, the market moves quickly and we are always looking to take our products one step further.

A bit about Beverley

  • Coca Cola or Pepsi?

Diet coke – I really don’t like Pepsi!

  • Cats or dogs?

Dogs – we have a cocker spaniel called Lester, who is as mad as a hatter, he fits in our household very well!

  • What would you do if you won the lottery (Think the big bucks)?

I would have to say that I would look after my family and friends mortgages, have a fair few BIG family holidays and donate a fair bit to charity…

  • What is the strangest thing you believed in as a child? 

Vampires, I used to go to bed with a cross firmly tucked under my chin, I’m still here so it must have worked!

  • If you got to have one superpower, what would it be and why?

I would like to be a transporter … because I could go anywhere I wanted to in the world and at any time, instantaneously, I’d go everywhere and anywhere!
