Mothercare plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange and attracts a turnover of approximately £750mn per annum and employs around 6,000 personnel. It specialises in products for expectant mothers and textile products for babies and children up to 8 years of age. The Company has a sound heritage dating back to 1961 when it was founded by Selim Zilkha and Sir James Goldsmith who at the time bought out a nursery furniture chain of 50 stores and expanded it to 400 stores in the ensuing 20years. In 2007 Mothercare bought the Early Learning Centre (ELC) chain for £85 million and also launched Gurgle, a pregnancy and parenting social networking website.
Mothercare sees huge opportunity for independent retailers to benefit from stocking their globally renowned brands particularly as they move away from having a High Street presence; hence the 2014 appointment of specialist multi-award winning distributor, Baby Brands Direct to service this. The brand is pioneering and understands parenting, empathically stating, “at Mothercare we understand that parenting can be a wonderful, frustrating, hilarious, exhausting and rewarding time.”
